Meerschaum Vale (LOCALITY), NSW Details
History
Siegfried Sohn gave the area the name Kianacane but when the school was opened the name Meerschaum Vale was adopted.
Description
A village about 8 km S of Alstonville. Boundaries within the Ballina Council area shown on map GNB3731.
Origin
Given its name by a pioneer sawmiller of the Lower Richmond Robert J. Randle beacuse of the supposed deposits of meerschaum clay to be found there. In 1879 Mr Randle came from Wardell and built a mill at Meerschaum Vale at the foot of a long hill. (Rich.Twd.Reg.Lib. & Rich R.Hist.Soc. 1983).
