History
The first colonist to live in the area was Augustus Alt (1731-1815) Governor Phillips surveyor general who in 1794 received a land grant of 100 acres in the Croydon area. (Book of Sydney Suburbs 1988).
Description
A suburb located about 2km WNW of Lewisham and about 3km E of Enfield. Boundaries shown on map marked GNB3602.
Origin
In 1803 Robert Campbell the pioneer merchants property extended from Cooks River to Liverpool Road Ashfield. It is significant that Campbells Fathers home in Argyllshire was called Ashfield. Extracted from Journal of Canterbury and District Historical Society published to celebrate Capt Cooks Bi-Centenary.
