Dumaresq River (RIVER), NSW Details

History

Aboriginal name Karaula. (MCCarthy; 1963). Originally named the Macintyre Brook by explorer Allan Cunningham. (Atchison 1976).

Description

A perennial stream forming portion of the headwaters of the Darling River. It rises about 20 km N of Stanthorpe in Queensland and flows generally SW and NW for about 250 km into the Macintyre River about 14 kilometres ESE of Boggabilla. Two main stream from the headwaters of this river the Dumaresq and Severn in Queenslands & Tenterfield Creek rising S of Tenterfield in N.S.W. From the junction of these stream the Dumaresq River forms to its confluence with Macintyre River portion of the boundary between the states of N.S.W. and Queensland.

So named by Allan Cunningham after the Dumaresq family (Gov. Darlings relatives) P. 55. (Infor. from Papers on Australian Place Names. J.S. Ryan)
