History

Description
A suburb about 4 km W by S of Mortdale and about 3 km S by W of Peakhurst. Boundaries shown on map marked GNB 3723.
Origin
Probably named after Lake Lugano (sic) on the border of Italy and Switzerland. Probably named by Thomas Holt or his employee James Murphy the manager of Holts Sutherland estate in the 1870s. The name applied to the general area of that reach of water and definitely applied to the northern shore - continued in History field.
