wordpress add a template file to your theme

this is the basic layout of adding a wordpress template php file to your wordpress theme.

good for custom theme pages

This is a really basic template with just the header, but once added wordpress will find it and allow pages to be assigned this template.

So create a new file called my-template.php in your theme directory.

Then add the following with your template name.

Once the template file is added a new menu item will appear on your page editor, with the name you have selected for the template.

Choose this and save and you will now be able to add custom template code.

HTML

<?php
/*
Template Name: Home Page
*/
?>

<!-- page header -->
<?php get_header(); ?>

<!-- page title -->
<?php the_title(); ?>

<!-- page content -->
<?php
while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?>
  <div class="entry-content-page">
      <?php the_content(); ?>
  </div>
<?php
endwhile; //resetting the page loop
wp_reset_query(); //resetting the page query
?>

<!-- Footer -->
<?php get_footer(); ?>

PHP

<?php
/*
Template Name: My Template Name
*/
get_header(); ?>
