Gwydir River (RIVER), NSW Details

Description

A major watercourse about 380 km long commencing at the junction of Rocky River and Boorolong Creek near Uralla and flowing generally NW and W near the towns of Bundarra Bingara and Gravesend and passing about 3km N of the town of Moree. Thence flowing generally W by the channel to the S of the feature known as Gwydir Raft and then flowing generally WNW for about 35km to Allambie Bridge. Thence flowing by a watercourse indefinite in places generally W and WSW to join the Barwon River about 13km NE of the town of Collarenebri.

Origin

Named after Lord Gwydir by Alan Cunningham in 1827. (Ref Papers on Australian Place Names J.S. Ryan 1963 Page 55.) The native name Guida is said to mean a river with red banks.
