History

Early river port. Gazetted as the town of CAROWA on 4 February 1859. A meeting held at Corowa in 1893 is regarded to have been the catalyst for the merging of the colonies (federation).

A town on the Murray River about 60 km west of Albury.

Also: rocky river. (McCarthy; 1963).

Aboriginal. Corowa or Currawa is the curra pine which yielded gum used by Aborigines to fasten the heads of spears to the shafts. (Reed; 1969
