History
There is a legend that says it was named by angry bullock drivers because the bullocks would baulk at the steep slope on the run from Parramatta.

Origin
The name was in offical use about 1801-2 and according to the Hills District Historical Society was bestowed by Andrew McDougall who arrived on the ship Barwell. He settled in the area in 1798 and named it after Baulkham Hills in the county of Roxburgh between Scotland & England. (Sydney suburbs K Anderson 1989).
