Nine Mile Lagoon (LAGOON), NSW Details
History
Name recorded on 1912 County of Young and 1965 1:250000 Wilcannia maps and confirmed by the field officer in 1978. Some confusion with `Nine Mile Lakes` meant the name was not presented to the Board.
Description
A non perennial lagoon located between Kallyanka Creek and Wilcannia to Wanaaring Road 17 km Northeast of Wilcannia (town).
Origin
It is believed there was a hotel named `Nine Mile Hotel` situated close to the old `Purnawilla` homestead and the lagoon. Thus when referring to the lagoon it was said to be the `Nine Mile Lagoon`. ( Central Darling Shire Council letter 9 August 1999 )
