History
Johnston (1764-1823) was one of the two claimants to have been first ashore at Port Jackson on the arrival of the First Fleet. He led the Rum Rebellion when troops arrested Governor Bligh in 1808.

A suburb about 2 km ESE of Dobroyd Point and about 2 km WSW of Glebe. Crosses local government boundary Leichhardt and Sydney. Boundaries determined when in Leichhardt LGA map GNB3587/A.
Origin
So named after its Scottish counterpart in Dumfries. P60. (Information from Papers on Australian Place Names J.S. Ryan) Leiutenant-Colonel George Johnston called his 40 ha grant on the Parramatta Rd Annandale after his Scottish birthplace. It was known for a while as Johnstons Bush. (K Anderson 1989).
