History
Formerly Dharuk Aboriginal land with Aboriginal artifacts dated up to 47 000 years old found in the area. (Appleton; 1992).
Description
A city on the Nepean River about 50 km west north west of Sydney.
Meaning
The word means chief ford and is beleived to have come into usage in NSW around 1818. (Penrith place names and origins Penrith Library 1982).
Origin
Governor Macquarie is credited with having named the township of Penrith after the city of Penrith in the county of Cumblerland in England.
