Originally named Pitt Island on the survey by Captain F.W. Sidney (1868-72).

An island on Pittwater about 4 km NNW of Mona Vale and about 2 km E of Bilgola Plateau.

In the very early years of the last centry Scotland Island was a grant to Andrew Thompson who named it after his native land.
