Origin

Field of Mars so called from its being first occupied by men from the marines which was probably the correct origin of the name though Marsdens biographer says that the parish was named Marsfield in memory of Samuel Marsden. (Royal Australian Historical Societys Journal Vol. 3 Part 1 p. 26)
