Name assigned as a town on 11 April 1977. First settler was Charles Whalan who was asscocaited with discovering Jenolan Caves (A-Z of Aust. Towns & Cities)

A town about 9 km west of Duckmaloi and about 5 km SW by S of Hazelgrove. Boundaries within the Oberon Council Area shown on map GNB3687/A.

Origin

Named after Oberon King of the Fairies in Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream. Oberon was first proclaimed a village in 1863.
