History
Construction on Hume Dam started after WWI. When finished in 1936 it was the biggest dam in the southern hemisphere and the second largest dam in the world.
Description
A major dam on the Murray River about 27 km upstream of Albury and about 1km west of the confluence of the Mitta Mitta and Murray Rivers. A solid concrete gravity and earth embankment dam constructed between 1916 and 1936 it has a height of 51m and a total wall length of 1615.5m. There are 2 hydro electric and 4 irrigation outlets and 29 spillway gates. Previously named Hume Weir by the Victorian Place Names Committee the name was altered to Hume Dam by notification in Victorian Government Gazette of 17 October 1996.
Origin
Following representations from the Municipal Council of Albury the River Murray Commission agreed on the 17 Feb 1920 that it would be appropriate in honour of the explorer Hume whoin company with Hovell first crossed the Murray near the site of the Upper Murray Storage in 1824 that this storage be named the Hume Reservoir
