The reserve is in the vicinity of the closed Burwood Colliery where Heywood was appointed first Undermanager when it was purchased by BHP in 1932.

Origin
Heywood Wilkinson (1906-1978) was born at East Greta and was involved in the coal industry all his life. He occupied the highest positions in the Australian coal industry. He was awarded the gold medal of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in the 1960s. After his retirement in 1966 he was appointed a member of the Joint Coal Board.
