Description
A locality on the western side of the Macquarie River about 3km SE by S of Junction Mountain and about 6km S by W of Hill End.
Origin
THE ROOT HOG.: the name came from a Yankee miner who brought a pig to the field and lacking the means of feeding it turned it loose with the admonition root hog or die. It is a waterhole and following the discovery there of reef gold by the Marshall family a small settlement grew with a stamper battery powered by channelled river
