History
Discovered by John Oxley and named Arbuthnot. (A History of the Nandewars; G.L.Hunt; p.2).
Description
A mountain range 207km long at the western end originating at Square Top Hill approx 24km WSW of Baradine. Its lie is then generally south to Mt Bullaway then generally east to Appletree Mountain and then SE until it joins the Great Dividing Range which it follows for 3km to the western end of the Liverpool Range near Omaleah Cliffs. It forms portion of the watershed between the Namoi River to the north and the Castlereagh River to the south.
Meaning
Probably Kamilaroi Aboriginal in origin and is thought to mean little mountains. Also: hut; Also: short mountains. (McCarthy; 1963).
