History
The range first seen from a high summit of Arbuthnots Range (Warrumbungle Mountains) was the objective of John Oxley George Evans and their companions in 1818.
Description
A range that is approx 280km long beginning as a spur of the Great Divide near Kentucky about 37kn SW of Armidale. It runs generally NW for about 82km then generally N for about 29km to near Mount Drummond about 11km W of Bundarra. It then swings WSW for about 75km past Barraba and then NW again for about 65km to Haystack Mountain about 13km ESE of Bellata. It forms part of the watershed of the Gwydir and Namoi Rivers.
Origin
The county was named after the range of mountains called Nandewar by the natives - more likely Nundawar. Hardwick (or NUNDAWAR); a range of mountains situated in the district of Liverpool Plains N.S.W. named by Mr. Oxley after the Earl of Hardwick. The highest elevations are Mount Apsley and Mount Shirley -
