Description
Proclaimed a town 4th October 1890. It is situated on the Main Northern Railway and New England State Highway between Armidale and Tamworth. It is also bounded on the north by Rocky Creek on the west by Rocky River and generally on the south by Burial Ground Gully and Flat Rock Gully. It has a population of about 2000 people.
Meaning
Said to be derived from Nganyaywana urala for at the camp (not verified). (Appleton; 1992). Also: big hill; camp; open running water; bye and bye. (McCarthy; 1963). Also: high mountain(M.Sharpe)
