Description

A town about 2km N by W of Deniliquin Aerodrome and about 11 km NNE of Southdown. Boundaries in Murray Council shown on map GNB3787. Boundaries within Conargo Council area shown on map GNB3750. Boundary of Deniliquin shown on map GNB3759.

Meaning

Said to be Aboriginal for wrestling ground but this is highly suspect. (Appleton; 1992). Also: from denilakoon for name of headman of a tribe. (McCarthy; 1963).

Origin

Aboriginal. Originally inhabited by Wiradhuri people. Name given by Benjamin Boyd to a property acquired in the 1840s. (Appleton; 1992).
