History
The Aboriginal name was Werriwa which is now applied to a Federal Electoral Division. (Reed 1969).
Description
A large perennial lake on the Great Dividing Range about 39 km north east of Canberra and 48 km south west of Goulburn. It lies between the towns of Collector to the north and Bungendore to the south being about 26 kms long in a N-S direction and reaching a maximum width of about 11 kms. The water is saline but not sufficiently so to prevent stock drinking it. The lake has been known to dry up.
Origin
Discovered by Joseph Wild in August 1820 named after King George IV three months later by Governor Macquarie.
