History
In 1951 reclamation began in the Hunter River estuary to combine the islands Hexham Ash Dempsey Moscheto Walsh Spectacle Table Pig and Goat. The reclaimed island in 1967 was named Kooragang Island
Description
The area at the southern extremity of Kooragang Island where the northern and southern branches of the Hunter River meet. Prior to reclamation works it was Walsh Island.

Origin
Henry Dean Walsh after whom this place is named was the first Engineer-in-Chief of the Sydney Harbour Trust after its establishment in 1901 and later became a Commissioner. His activities covered the port of Newcastle and Walsh Island was named in memory of him.
