a reusable function that extracts the Gemini API functionality

Here's a reusable function that extracts the Gemini API functionality:The function generateWithGemini() accepts:

  • $prompt - The text prompt to send to the API
  • $apiKey - Your Gemini API key
  • $model - Optional model name (defaults to 'gemini-1.5-flash')
  • $userAgent - Optional user agent string

It returns an associative array with:

  • success - Boolean indicating if the request succeeded
  • data - The generated text (empty string if failed)
  • error - Error message (empty string if successful)

This makes it easy to reuse throughout your application and handle errors consistently. You can replace your existing code with a simple function call and check the result.

PHP

<?php

/**
 * Generate content using Google's Gemini API
 *
 * @param string $prompt The text prompt to send to the API
 * @param string $apiKey Your Gemini API key
 * @param string $model The model to use (default: gemini-1.5-flash)
 * @param string $userAgent Optional user agent string
 * @return array Returns array with 'success' (bool), 'data' (string), and 'error' (string)
 */
function generateWithGemini($prompt, $apiKey, $model = 'gemini-1.5-flash', $userAgent = 'PHP-Gemini-Client/1.0') {
    // Validate inputs
    if (empty($prompt) || empty($apiKey)) {
        return [
            'success' => false,
            'data' => '',
            'error' => 'Prompt and API key are required'
        ];
    }

    // Prepare API URL
    $geminiUrl = "https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta/models/{$model}:generateContent?key={$apiKey}";

    // Prepare request data
    $data = [
        'contents' => [
            ['parts' => [['text' => $prompt]]]
        ]
    ];

    // Initialize cURL
    $ch = curl_init($geminiUrl);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, true);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, [
        'Content-Type: application/json',
        "User-Agent: {$userAgent}"
    ]);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, json_encode($data));

    // Execute request
    $response = curl_exec($ch);

    // Check for cURL errors
    if ($response === false) {
        $error = 'cURL Error: ' . curl_error($ch);
        curl_close($ch);
        return [
            'success' => false,
            'data' => '',
            'error' => $error
        ];
    }

    curl_close($ch);

    // Decode JSON response
    $responseData = json_decode($response, true);
    if (json_last_error() !== JSON_ERROR_NONE) {
        return [
            'success' => false,
            'data' => '',
            'error' => 'JSON Decode Error: ' . json_last_error_msg()
        ];
    }

    // Extract generated text
    $generatedText = $responseData['candidates'][0]['content']['parts'][0]['text'] ?? '';
    if (empty($generatedText)) {
        return [
            'success' => false,
            'data' => '',
            'error' => 'No content generated by Gemini API'
        ];
    }

    return [
        'success' => true,
        'data' => $generatedText,
        'error' => ''
    ];
}

// Example usage:
/*
$prompt = "Generate an original, engaging news article about something!...";
$result = generateWithGemini($prompt, $geminiApiKey);

if ($result['success']) {
    $generatedText = $result['data'];
    // Process your generated text here
} else {
    // Handle error
    echo "Error: " . $result['error'];
}
*/

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day. Never lose a holy curiosity.
