using parse_url to extract parts of a url

Category: PHP

the parse_url php function will split a url into an array of url fragments

$url = "http://kruxor.com/path/?argument=value#anchor";
var_dump(parse_url($url));

parse_url example

Use parse_url on the current url

You can extract the current url bits using $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; (which only gives you the request uri)

$url = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
var_dump(parse_url($url));

parse_url current url example

on further testing it seems that getting the full url in php is more of a pain than the above code

you need to do something like this to get the url

$current_url = (isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) ? "https" : "http") . "://$_SERVER[HTTP_HOST]$_SERVER[REQUEST_URI]";

so the example now is

$current_url = (isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) ? "https" : "http") . "://$_SERVER[HTTP_HOST]$_SERVER[REQUEST_URI]";
var_dump(parse_url($current_url));

while is javascript all you need to do is window.location.href

ok so what if i needed to just extract the /code/ part of the url?

one way you can do this is with explode() and you dont even need the parse_url so all this was a waste of time! :P (😋)

$path_array = explode("/",$_SERVER[REQUEST_URI]);
var_dump($path_array);

so in this case all i need is $path_array['1']

When I realized that, no individual step is hard in any process. Building this airport I'm standing in right now started with a guy writing the architectural plans on paper. That's not hard for him to do. Then laying the first beam isn't had. The whole thing is really hard. So, just take each step kind of piece by piece and when I was able to do that and stop trying to chase this prize and started putting in the work, things just started coming together.
