History

Description
Partly perennial stream rising about 2km NW of Suffolk Park. It flows generally N through Cumbebin Swamp and NW for about 6km into the Coral Sea at the western end of Byron Bay.
Meaning
Bilongil for inlet of the sea at Byron Bay but descriptive only as word is derived from bilang for she-oak or creek-oak and -gil could be variant of -gir a suffix that can be used for a class of trees. (Rich. Tweed Reg. Lib. & Rich. River Historical Society. 1983).
Origin
Also found as Bilongil and as an older name for Casino Boolangel and Bylongil. (Richmond Tweed Regional Lib. and Rich. River Historical Society. 1983). Also: from billung the native oak. (M.Sharpe).
