History
Although assigned as Lyell Reservoir at the request of the Electricity Commission the name was never adopted by Council or the public. The name was changed in March 1997 to reflect common useage.
Description
A reservoir being the waters impounded by the Lyell Dam on the Coxs River. It is situated about 8km south west of Lithgow Railway Station and extends from the dam wall on the road from Old Bowenfels to Tarana upstream for about 6km to a point about 3km east south east of Rydal. Formed in 1982 by the rising waters of Coxs River it was increased in 1995 when the dam embankment was raised by 3.5m. At a full supply level of 785.5m it has a storage capacity of 33500 ML and a surface area of 234ha. It provides water to Wallerawang and Mt Piper Power Stations.
