Castlereagh River (RIVER), NSW Details
History
It was discovered by G.W. Evans during Oxleys expedition in 1818 and was named after Lord Castlereagh Secretary of State for the Colonies as was Castlereagh Street in Sydney. (Reed 1969).
Description
A river about 566 km long. It rises about 20 km W of Coonabarabran and flows E SW by W S by E SW by W NW by W NW by N NW by W then W into Macquarie River about 65 km W by S of Walgett.
Origin
So named in 1818 by Oxley after Lord Castlereagh. P. 378. (Information from RAHS Journal Vo. 48 Pt 5)
