Named after John Paton VC (1843-1914) who was a member of the 93rd Highlanders who served throughout the Crimean campaign. From 1890 to February 1896 he was Governor of Goulburn Gaol having served at Port Macquarie Deniliquin Darlinghurst and Berrima gaols previously. At the time of his death he resided in Prospect Road Summer Hill.
