History
John Oxley traversed the area in 1818 and named the Peel River but did not report the name Goonoo Goonoo. Major T.L. Mitchell travelled nearby in 1831; he reported Callala as the name of the Peel River
Description
A perennial stream rising on the northern slopes of Peel Range about 1.6 km north of Crawney Mountain. It flows in a generally northern direction for about 50 km to its junction with Peel River at Tamworth.

Various meanings have been given depending upon the root word believed duplicated in the name. Goonoo Goonoo = Place of Good Water
Origin
Known as Goonou or Forest Creek in 1837 Forest being given by Sir W.E. Parry in 1832 and Goonou presumably being the Aboriginal name ascertained shortly after this. The duplicated Goonoo Goonoo is reported current in 1841.
