History
At the time of the demolition of Birch-Grove House in 1969 it was one of the oldest houses in Australia. The Birchgrove school was opened in 1885.

A neighbourhood about 3 km E by N of Drummoyne and about 3 km WSW of North Sydney. Boundaries shown on map marked GNB 3587/A
Origin
The northernmost finger of Balamain was granted to a private in the NSW Corps in 1796 who established an orange grove there. In 1810 he sold it to John Birch paymaster to Gov. Macquaries 73rd regiment who built Birch-Grove House there. (Sydney Suburbs K Anderson 1989).
