Lake Illawarra (LAGOON), NSW Details
History
George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first to visit the district. Flinders recorded the fact that it was called Alowrie by the natives. It was whilethey were in the tiny 8ft craft the Tom Thumb in 1796.
Description
A lagoon about 5 km SE of Dapto and about 6 km SW by W of Port Kembla.
Origin
An adaptation of an Aboriginal word Elouera Eloura or Allowrie variously translated as pleasant place near the sea or high place near the sea or white clay mountain. Wurra or Warra probably means mountain and Illa may be white clay. (Reed 1969).
