History
Captain Byron circumnavigated the globe in 1764-66 and thus preceded Cook on the Pacific. He was in command of HMS Dolphin.
Description
An indentation in the coastline formed by the Coral Sea. It extends west from Cape Byron to Belongil Creek mouth.
Origin
Named by Captain Cook after Captain John Byron grandfather of the subject of Lord Byron poet. (Reed 1969).
