The town was laid out in 1862 and is 7 miles from the site of Mitchells Fort Bourke. Aboriginal name Nulta Nulta and also Wertie Mertie or Wurmurtah meaning high ground.

BOURKE - first known as Fort Bourke named in 1835 by Major Thomas Mitchell after the Governor of N.S.W. Richard Bourke appointed in 1831- 1837. Originally Kurnu Aboriginal land. (Appleton 1992).
