Lyell Dam (DAM), NSW Details
Description
A concrete faced rockfall dam situated on the Coxs River about 6km SW of Lithgow. It is about 3km NW of Lawsons Sugarloaf and is crossed by the road from the Great Western Highway at South Bowenfels to Tarana. Originally completed in June 1982 with a height of 46m the height was increased by 3.5m and the spillway widened by 40m in 1995. The impounded waters are used by Wallerawang and Mt Piper Power Stations.
Origin
In 1983 John Frederick Lyell (1863-1913) settled in the district. He was granted approximately 700 acres of Crown Land fronting the Coxs River at a point upstream of the dam known as Lyells Crossing before it was inundated by the impounded waters.
