History

Following a proposal by Hume Shire Council and with the concurrence of the Murray Darling Basin Commission the name was changed to Lake Hume on the 02 Aug 1996.

Description

Lake Hume is the main operating storage of the Murray River system and is the waters of the Murray and Mitta Mitta Rivers impounded by the Hume Dam on the Murray River. The lake has a Full Supply Level of 192m AHD a capacity of 3038000 megalitres and a catchment area of 15276 sq km. The waters of the lake extend for some 65km upstream of the dam as measured along the channel of the Murray River. The Hume Dam which creates the reservoir is situated about 27km upstream of Albury on the Murray River.

Origin

Following representations from the Municipal Council of Albury the River Murray Commission agreed on the 17 Feb 1920 that it would be appropriate in honour of the explorer Hume whoin company with Hovell first crossed the Murray near the site of the Upper Murray Storage in 1824 that this storage be named the Hume Reservoir.
