A composite island formed by reclaiming of the channels separating the island Hexham Ash Moscheto Dempsey Goat Spectacle Table Pig and Walsh. It is in the Hunter River estuary bounded by the northern and southern branches of this river. It covers an area of about 16 sq km. Considerable industrial expansion has taken place and more is anticipated.

Origin
From the language of the AWABAKAL and KATTANG tribes who frequented the coastal areas of New South Wales from Lake Macquarie to Port Stephens. Also the name of the estate purchased by REVC. Pleydell N. Wilton M.A. in 1845 of 14 acres on Mosquito Island now portion of this island.
