This locality was originally known as Tweed River Junction or The Junction until 1880 when the name of the post office was changed to Tumbulgum. Folklaw has it that this word meant meeting of waters

A village on the Pacific Highway. It is about 10 km NE of Murwillumbah Also assigned as an address locality.
Meaning
