Steele Point (POINT), NSW Details
History
Name was changed to `Steele Point` in response to a letter sent by the Woollahra History and Heritage Society. This name is shown on early charts of Port Jackson such as that showing Capt Hunters survey.
Description
A point about 2 km NE of Point Piper and about 2 km SSE of Georges Heights.
Origin
Believed to have been named by Captain Arthur Phillip after the Joint Secretary to the Treasury Thomas Steele. Steele was a Joint Secretary during the time of the preparation and sailing of the First Fleet. (Orlovich P Member of the Geographical Names Board letter dated 24 October 1991)
