Origin
Named after John Hay who was member for the district in 1859 and later Sir John Hay. (Infor. from RAHS Journal Vol 38 pt 3) HAY - A crossing place in the Murrumbidgee River previously named Langs Crossing. Named after Sir John Hay M.L.A. who was Minister for Lands 3/10/1856-9/9/1857. Hay was proclaimed a municipal district in 1872.
