A suburb of the City of Sydney 9.6 km S of the G.P.O. Boundaries within the Botany Bay Council area on map GNB3711.
Origin
Botany is the oldest name in Sydney bestwoed by Captain Cook who landed here in 1770. Originally he called it Sting-rays Harbour but changed the name to commemorate the large number of plants new to science found there. (Sydney Suburbs K Anderson 1989)
