Barwon River (RIVER), NSW Details
Description
A perennial stream forming portion of the headwaters of the Darling River. It receives its identity at the junction of the Macintyre and Weir Rivers about 18 km NNE of Mungindi from whence it flows generally SW and W for about 400 km to its confluence with the Culgoa River about 39 km ENE of Bourke to become the Darling River. The main townships on the river are Mungindi Collarenebri Walgett and Brewarrina.
Origin
Aboriginal: from barwum or bawon meaning great wide awful river of muddy water. (Reed 1967) Also:Baawana Ngiyambaa Aboriginal name for both the Barwon and Darling.These rivers were of great importance; stone fish traps still exist near Brewarrina.(Appleton1992).
