History
In 1902 after devestating droughts the State Parliment approved the establishment of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme. Construction of the dam started in 1907 and was completed in 20 yrs later.
Description
Dam on the Murrumbidgee River retaining the waters of Lake Burrinjuck about 35 km SW of Yass. Situated high in the mountains of the Great Dividing Range.
Meaning
From the Aboriginal words Booren Yiak meaning precipitous mountain. (Major Rural Dams of NSW Dept. L&WC).
