Description
This is one of the larger rivers in New South Wales. It receives its identity where the Macdonald River meets Boundary Creek in the parish of Retreat County of Inglis. Thence it flows generally westward passing the towns of Manilla Carroll Gunnedah Boggabri Narrabri Wee Waa and finally flows into the Barwon River near Walgett. It has several tributaries the principal being - Macdonald River Manilla River Peel River Coxs Creek and Mooki River.

Also: derived from Kamilaroi Aboriginal ngamu for breast. (Apple- ton; 1992).
Origin
Namoi River. Allan Cunningham botanist-explorer called this river Mitchell after a surgeon in Sydney who was dismissed from Government Service because he refused to attend the flogging of a convict at Hyde Park barracks. Namoi (Nammoy) is the native name for a species of acacia.. A.E. Martin.
