History
Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817) was a Polish soldier who fought for freedom in both America and Poland. (Refer to file for more details). Aboriginal name of Mt Kosciusko is believed to be Tar-gin-gal.
Description
A mountain within the Snowy Mountains and Kosciuszko National Park. It is situated about 14.5 km SE by E of Mount Youngal and about 7 km NW of Thredbo Valley. It is the highest mountain in Australia.
Origin
Named by Paul Edmund Strzelecki who on the 15th February 1840 became the first European to climb this eminence. He named it after the Polish patriot Tadeusz Kosciuszko who is buried in Wawel Cathedral Cracow. The spelling is as recorded by Strzelecki in 1840 and shown on the first County of Selwyn map published in 1851.
