Description
A town known as the Sapphire City 69 km W of Glen Innes 8 km N of Gilgai and about 6 km NNE of Leviathan. Boundaries within the Inverell Council area shown on map GNB3654.
Meaning
The word is derived from the Gaelic and means meeting of the swans. (Reed 1969).
Origin
INVERELL Named after Alexander Campbells Station Inverell which he settled in 1836. Named said to be of Gaelic Origin Inver meeting place Ell a swan. Town first called - Byron (Gov. Gaz. 8.6. 1858) Possibly after Lord Byron the Poet whose poems were Popular at that time. Native name of locality said to be Gree Gree.
