History

Originally called Hillgoel or Illgoel an Aboriginal word of the Yukambal meaning a swamp. (Atchison 1976).

Description

A town on the New England Highway about 11 km by road S of Llangothlin. The town lies on the watershed of the Great Dividing Range. Boundaries within Guyra Shire Gaz 25 Aug 1995 shown map GNB3771.

Meaning

For: fishing place or white cockatoo. (McCarthy; 1963).
