History
Major Mitchell recorded the name TURI for the mountain on 9/12/1831 (Three Journeys..M/L 981/2A1-2). Sir W.E. Parry recorded the name DURII on 26/3/1832 (JRAHS v.9 p. 123). Robert Dixons Map of N.S.W.*

Origin
The parish was formed before 1874 (shown on 1874 county map). The name was taken from a conspicuous mountain just outside the N.W. corner of the parish using Major Mitchells spelling.
