Gibbergunyah Range (RIDGE), NSW Details
History
Name given by Mr Ernie Staff who cut timber in Whian Whian forest. He built a humpy on top of range which was a slab hut with a stone fireplace. (Richmond Tweed Regional Library. 1984).
Description
A ridge extending off Nightcap Range about 4 km NW of Peates Mountain in generally SSW direction for about 10 km to the junction of Terania Creek and Branch Creek.
Meaning
Also: gibbie gunyahs meaning caves or hollows. (RAHSV.6Prt.4p171) Also: Prob. from gibar in Gidhabal for tawny colour in Yugambeh for white in Minyangbal for white or yellow light small. Also: Minyangbal gibar for stage of initiation. (M.Sharpe).
Origin
Aboriginal. From: said to be constructed from gibber for stone and gunyah for hut. This is not Bundjalung in origin. (Richmond Tweed Regional Library & Richmond River Historical Society. 1983).
