History
Named by Captain Cook in May 1770 after Commodore John Byron of H.M.S. Dolphin who commanded a voyage of exploration in 1764-66. Cook named area on 15/5/1770.

Origin
Aboriginal Bundjalung for area Cavanbah referring to proximity of scrub as in gaban (where the b slides into v as gabvan). The suffix -bah represents present location. Another Bundjalung name for area was Koranbah for quick flowing waters around the headland. (Richmond Tweed Regional Library. 1984).
